Practice will resume as normal on Monday.

Volunteers Needed!

Thanks to everyone who has been involved in volunteering this season, but we need more parents to step up and help!  We've created volunteer worksheet on SignUp Genius so people can pick what they would like to help with.  We need everyone to take a turn with helping the team - so please check your email for the SignUp Genius link and volunteer for at least 1 thing please!

Volunteers needed ASAP!

With our season in full swing, we are in desperate need of volunteers to help with game day responsibilities ranging from running the concession stand to helping run the scoreboard, run our score book at the table, etc.  If you are interested in volunteering:

MVAA Lacrosse Needs You!

We believe that our high school program (players and coaches alike) have a responsibility to give back to our community.  As a player, you have the opportunity to give back by helping build our MVAA rec lacrosse program.  By helping out, you:

Get to give back to the same community who helped develop you as a player when you were younger

  • Get to volunteer doing something you love
  • Get to help improve the younger players who will eventually feed into the same high school you attend – thus improving our own high school program
  • Get desperately needed volunteer hours!

As a player volunteer, you will be assigned to one team/coach to help.  Here is what is expected of you:

  • Show up to their practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays (unless you have a high school game)
  • You are not asked to run the practices.  Instead, the coaches would like to use you to help demonstrate various stick skills, drills, etc to help enforce the concept the coach is teaching.
  • Help correct younger players as they are working on the skill or drill.

 Here are some more details:

  • There are no Saturday game commitments
  • The hours you spend can go towards community service hours – which look great on college applications!
  • High School players in grades 9 and 10 will help the Bantam and Lightning teams – those practices run from 6:00 to 7:30 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • High School players in grades 11 and 12 will help the Junior and Senior teams – those practices run from 7:30 to 9:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • All practices are at Rabbit Hill Park, so you don’t even have to leave the field after your high school practice!

Practice Attendance Problems

Parents - we are having more difficulty than we should with having players consistently attend practice. We are having too many players miss practices for too many things unrelated to academic commitments and it must be resolved in order for the team to perform well.  From now on, we are requiring A PARENT to email Coach Callaway at Justin_Callaway@gwinnett.k12.ga.us when their son will miss practice.  Aside from academic responsibilities or being sick, players should be attending every practice.  For our your son, and our program to continue to improve, I encourage all parents to help us enforce this and I that you do your best to schedule things concerning your son around practices the best they can to avoid having missed practices.  Missing practices too often will have to result in reduced playing time.

Scrimmage Tomorrow!

We will be heading to Sprayberry tomorrow for a scrimmage.  Here are some very important details:

  • Students may go home after school, but MUST be at the field house no later than 3:30.
  • Players are expected to have had a light meal or heavy snack before getting on the bus
  • Scrimmage starts at 6:45pm at Sprayberry (Marietta, GA)
  • Players are expected to bring a large bottle of water or a gallon jug of water to drink on the way there and back.
  • We will provide a meal AFTER the scrimmage for the players
  • Players are expected to call their parents when we are leaving Sprayberry to arrange rides home.  Players may also call when we are approximately 20 minutes from MVHS so the parents can arrive one time.
  • Parents - please be respectful of our coaches' time and be at the school when the bus arrives - in other words, please do not leave your house to go to the school to pick up your player AFTER we have already arrived at school.
  • Players are expected to bring plenty of clothing so they can dress for the weather at game time.  All apparel worn during the game must be black, gold, and/or white.

Player Dues, insurance cards, etc...

If you have not paid the player dues, please do so ASAP.  We rely on that money to pay for player gear, gameday meals, and a whole bunch of other things.

In addition, if you have been told your player still needs a physical or we are missing a copy of your insurance card, please get that done ASAP.

Thanks for you time and we hope everyone is enjoying the season so far!

Varsity Tryouts and Player Pickup after Practice

Update on Varsity Tryouts

Your coaching staff wants to give everyone an update on Varsity tryouts.  Yesterday, we made preliminary decisions on players who made the varsity team.  We also discussed with some other players who still might make the varsity team.  However, we wanted to make sure a few important points were made clear:

1.  We have done the initial pick of players we feel give us the best shot to win varsity games, regardless of age - as we've said before, the best players will play varsity regardless of age.

2. We are still evaluating players, and also have to wait for those still wrestling to join the team to give them a fair tryout - considering we are waiting for players to join the team still (some in wrestling, some healing from injuries) as well as the fact that we're putting in a new offense and defense this year and have not worked up to a full 6v6 scrimmage yet, some of our decisions might change (some varsity players might need to go down to JV, and some V players might prove they belong on the varsity team).

3.  As the season progresses, our rosters can change - players might become ineligible, we might sustain season ending injuries, some players might not perform as needed at the varsity level, and some JV players might excel as the season goes on and those things might warrant roster changes.

4.  If players who did not make varsity are not happy with the decision, here is what we recommend:

  • Continue to work hard to show what your capable of - this means giving 100% each rep in practice
  • Ask a coach for feedback on what you need to improve on and work on those things- we don't mind giving players honest feedback on what they need to improve on, they just need to ask.
  • Continue to be a good teammate

We appreciate every player's time and commitment and don't want to lose any player - we encourage everyone to keep with it and continue to get better.  The improvement we've seen over the first week of practice has been great - we just need to keep working hard every day and getting better as individual players, as a team, and an overall program.

Player Pickup after Practice-

Just as a reminder, practices are ending at 6pm, so please pick your athlete up at that time.  If you are unable to pick them up on time, please arrange for someone else to take them home each day.

The coaching staff is trying to make sure we end by 6pm each day so you are not waiting around for us, but please do your best to have your athlete picked up right after practice so the coaching staff can get back to their families and their responsibilities at their homes too.  Thanks!

- Be Prepared for Practices!

  • Always have sneakers, shorts, and a t-shirt with you in case we run on a track or something.
  • Always have full gear with you (including cups, mouth pieces, etc!)
  • Take care of your body!
    • Drink plenty of water before, during, and after practice!
    • Eat a solid lunch at school
    • Eat quality foods - garbage in/garbage out - eat plenty of nutrient rich foods to help your body repair and strengthen!
    • DRESS FOR THE WEATHER - if you are not prepared for cold weather, you will have to be sent home.
    • Get plenty of rest/sleep - Limit phone time or being in front of the TV for 30 minutes more than you normally would each night so you can get to sleep earlier
    • Shin Splints - happens to lots of players every year - to help handle them and avoid them altogether:
      • stretch your calves and lower back and sit on your feet to stretch out.
      • invest in quality inserts for your cleats and shoes - this will help avoid shin splints altogether
      • at the parents' discretion and supervision, get on an ibuprofen regimen to keep the inflammation down (this is optional and we always recommend having a doctor or our team trainer give advice)

Apply ice
